Lifesong Adventures: Man Vs Wild

I had a great time photographing a wilderness adventure last week for 1859 Magazine.  The organizing company is Lifesong Adventures, and they custom fit wilderness adventures for any group, any where.  I can’t say enough great things about this organization.  They are field experts in a variety of wilderness training, from shelter building to animal tracking to what you can and can’t eat while lost in the forest.

Owners Mark and Celeste are consultants on the Man Vs Wild TV series, but their most enjoyment comes from teaching all of us how to live with only a knife and some flint in the wilderness.  Girls take note:  they love it when you sign up!  And this felt more like Man WITH Wild.

Here are a few images from the shoot.  Full story will be run in the April issue of 1859 Magazine.  The last image is of the bear that tried to get into my cabin one night.  (Photo courtesy of Celeste Cole)

Oregon Ballet Theatre Approves Ad

I am very excited about some great news today! While creating the headshots of all ballet dancers who dance at Oregon Ballet Theatre, I kept thinking about a potential ad for them that would enable the general public to get to know the dancers a bit more intimately.  I contacted my ad agency friend and told him what I was thinking. He created some quick concepts, we met with the marketing team at OBT, and they liked the ad.

I than contacted the editor at 1859 Magazine, asked about potentially running the ad, and today they told me that they will be the first to run the ad.  A full page ad will run in their Winter 2010 issue.

Here is the ad.  I would like this campaign to run as a series using all of the dancers’ photos and words.  We are also looking at changing the font type to be each dancer’s handwriting instead of text.

Magazine Work: 1859 Assignment

One of my favorite assignments is to get a call from a magazine, hear a great story about a person, and then get the go-ahead to meet them and photograph them.  I never know what I will find when I arrive at the scene….but most likely it is a fascinating person with an incredible background. I usually only have a few minutes to assess lighting and backgrounds, and I love that challenge of finding the sweet spot of light and learning as much as I can about this person in a short period of time.

Here is a link to a recent multi-portrait assignment from the newly launched 1859 Magazine.

Check out the video on this site as well, for a behind the scenes peek at one of the larger shoots from this assignment. (Thank you for that, Sandymontana Creative!)

Hero Wall Celebration + Coverage

Yesterday’s Hero Wall Celebration was a heart-thumping event.  It was so great to see all of the families together, and to hear great music, watch the kids get their faces painted and rejoice in some health improvements. It is a true honor to be work with these families. Huge THANK YOU to Pro Photo Supply and George McGinnis for donating the file prep and printing of the wall, and to DigiCraft for mounting the prints.

TV coverage here.

Oregonian coverage here.

And heeeeeere is George, O Printer Extraordinaire!

A father’s emotion:

And there is a serious side to the day as well.  This is not a typical “happy” photo from the festivities, but I am sure this little girl has many questions in her mind.

Images Seen in Christiane Amanpour’s CNN Coverage of Gaza

It is a very odd feeling to be sitting in a hotel in NYC and see my images in the background in Mercy Corps’ headquarters in Gaza.  I hesitate to feel good about such a thing when the country is in such peril, but I heard that the images brighten people’s lives there. So I am honored to be a teeny tiny part of effort in that area of our world.

Here is what the Mercy Corps’ video/media director had to say about the photos:

You should know that Christiane asked me where the photos were taken and she really liked them–I mean she totally commented on them and she was not exactly forthcoming in praise on much! So huge kudos to you!!!! Now the hard question.. the country director here (who is an amazing woman from Gaza who ran the office through the war while 4 months pregnant and kept the aid moving…) is in love with your photos. If I left them here she would be incredibly happy. What do you say?  GORGEOUS Pics.  And know you just made the whole Gaza team really happy!!

And to think that I have a hard time transporting these huge images just through town…and they look like they made the trip all the way to Gaza in great shape!  I hope they do brighten the walls during such difficult circumstances.

Here is a link to the CNN story

And many thanks to Pro Photo Supply for donating the printing of the images!

Black and White Magazine Publishes Photo of Walter Chappell

I got the call out of the blue one day.  Aryan Chappell knew that I had taken photos of his late father, Walter Chappell, on two occasions in the 1990s.  Aryan had just written an article about his father for Black and White Magazine and requested that I include a portrait to accompany the article.

The article is a lovely account of a wonderful photographer, painter and brilliantly creative human being.  Thank you, Aryan, for giving us a view into your father’s remarkable life.

We miss you, Walter.

(See more images of Walter, and how I came to meet him, on my website, 2nd page under “Projects”.)
